update!

Hello Lovely blog readers

A week has passed since  this project was created and therefore I felt it was time for an update.
After many many e-mails we've had a few responses with great news.
Firstly the artists we have on board so far are both hugely talented, charming and fantastic illustrators; Ben Newman and Femke de Jong .
I truly love their work so I implore you to check them out.
In other news Venue Magazine have said they will try and find us a bit of space and The amazing people at Nobrow tweeted about us on Saturday which was a fantastic as they have 1700 followers which beats my 2 hands down! ( if you want to follow me I'm@whatkeepsmeupat)

And a big thank you to Rosa a fellow student who has already got 2 pieces to donate!
I think that's it for now but keep supporting/making and doing.
And heres some of my work ( I felt the blog could do with some colour) which was based on a dream I had.

Bye for now!
Naomi

what are the possibilties?

Hello!

I made a list of all the kinds of things that would work really well for this project , this is by no means a definitive list but I wanted to encourage all kinds  people to make all kinds of things.
Even if you've had no training what so ever but love creating lovely things please please do get in touch  after all this isn't about art snobbery , it's about making money for a worthy cause.
so heres a list of the kind of things I'm after.
  • Paintings ( figurative ,abstract, I want all of it!)
  • Prints ( including nice quality digital prints)
  • sketches/doodles
  • Photographs
  • collage/photomontage
  • Jewelery
  • Handmade clothing and accessories
  • Ceramics
  • Puppets
  • hand bound books of any kind
  • paper sculpture
  • masks
  • laser cuts
  • textiles
  • bags ( screenprinted canvas bags as well)
  • knitted wares
  • sculpture
  • zines/independent publications
This is NOT a definitive list and if you have any other ideas I'm sure they'll be grand. I'm very excited to see what you all come up with. However much I appreciate things like sound installations and performance art , they're not the greatest money spinners and at the moment I'm looking more for objects to sell , but who knows what the future holds.
Cheers
Naomi

''Be productive with your blues''

Hello

24 hours since the project was started and I have had an overwhelming response from people offering to help!
It's incredibly moving to know how caring and willing to help my friends and fellow students have been and I just hope this will extend to lots and lots of people outside the realms of my facebook page.
I have e-mailed a large handful of  more established illustrators and artists who I admire to be part of the project , no responses yet but it has only been day after all. Let's keep everything crossed that they will offer their minds and their talent.
I have however heard from Venue magazine who said they will try and find some space to mention this project .
In other good news I've had lots of my very very talented fellow illustration students offer to make pieces which is great seeing as we are all buried under mountains of work.
Hooray for the illustration students!
Here's something to keep you all inspired.

Cheers!
Naomi

Miranda July Pillowcases

Weirdly enough the exictement about this project kept me up for a few hours last night!
I thought about the kind of work that would be suited to this project, and I remembered these pillowcases made by the artist ( and one of my heroes) Miranda July.
Maybe we can make this project so big we can get famous contributors from across the pond.

Thanks!
Naomi

ps: please let me know of any artists/illustrators/photographers/craftspeople who you think would be suited to this project/willing to do something for free.it doesn't matter how big or small , Let's aim high!

The Idea

What keeps me up at night.

My Name is Naomi Wilkinson and I am a worrier , to be more precise a night time worrier.
I wasn't always like this , I used to lead a normal happy night time life ( cue rose tinted memory montage of me on a swing and trying on funny hats) but these days it's different ; the second i turn the light out it begins , I lie there between my beautiful snoring boy and the neighbours cat who is trying to bite my toes and I think.
I think about everything from how much change is put in the bin by accident to what I would say to make Jarvis Cocker my friend.
These are of course light hearted worries  some may even say idiotic, but more recently these worries have become increasing dark ( and not just dark in a human centipede kind of way , although the human centipede trailer alone has kept me up for many hours) these worries have become increasingly dark in a realistic ,angry ,worried-about-the-future of thousands of people.
After speaking to a friend who works for a small charity which gives support to young vulnerable homeless people I came away shocked and angry at what the government spending cuts mean for these charities , they are struggling to survive without support from the government and yet we don't seem to hear about it .
I was also told that due to cuts in council funding children who report abuse are not re-homed straight away because of these cuts.
Hearing this made me feel incredibly upset and I couldn't stop thinking about it .
I know everyone is feeling the pinch and it's rubbish about the arts funding cuts and the rise in tuition fees , but not everyone wants to look at paintings or go to university but everyone I know wants children and vunerable young people to have happy lives .
I refuse to become daily maily about this and rant about the politicians, the bankers , the social workers and the parents , instead of ranting lets try and have a go at doing something.
My idea is a project called '' What keeps me up at night'' I'm hoping to get as many new , old ,amazing, famous , unknown , bizarre and conventional illustrators /photographers/makers/doers/artists/sculptors to produce a piece about what worries them at night .They will then hopefully donate something to sell ( anything that illustrates this the brief i.e drawing to edition of prints , finger puppets , videos or doodles ) on an Etsy shop I will set up specifically for this and then the money will go to the charities Safeplace and Kid's Company.
If you're an illustrator please consider illustrating something , if you're a maker please consider making something , if you're media savvy maybe you could give me tips on what the hell I should do! I would also love someone to create an animation/film to publicise the cause.
Its in the really early stages and I don't think It will get going till new year but I just wanted to know what you all think about it and if you'd be willing to help.Any kind of help would be great and if I've sent this message to you it means I think you could help ,please send it on to anyone you think would be as well.
Cheers
Naomi
